In the last couple of decades, a wide range of toothpaste have swooped the market. The availability of different types of toothpaste has made the entire process of choosing the right toothpaste a bit confusing. It is important to do a bit of individual research and consult your dentist before you opt for a specific brand of toothpaste.
Here is a quick guide that will help you choose the right toothpaste.
1. Toothpaste based on Fluoride content
Fluoride is one of the most important ingredients in a toothpaste. Fluoride has played a very important role to reduce dental cavities and tooth decay in the last 50 years. You can check the amount of fluoride in your toothpaste by looking at the box in which the toothpaste is packaged. It is written as “ppmF” i.e. parts per million of fluoride. How to choose a toothpaste can be tricky; however, your dentist would be the best person to help you decide that for you.
2. Tartar control toothpaste
Today, there are various tartar control toothpaste that contains fluoride in the market. You may have noticed a thin layer of bacteria on your teeth. The thin layer of bacteria is known as plaque and if not removed on time could prove to be difficult to get rid of. The tartar settles near or inside the gums that leads to gum diseases. The ingredients in the tartar control toothpaste prevent the accumulation of tartar and ensure healthy teeth and gums. Chemical compounds such as pyrophosphate and zinc citrate are added to the toothpaste. Such toothpaste also contains an antibiotic called antibiotic known as triclosan which is highly effective to clean plaque.
3. Toothpaste for sensitive teeth
It is common to see that several individuals experience an irritating pain when they consume hot or cold food items or drinks. The pain in most cases is usually caused due to a cavity in the tooth. However, sensitive teeth also cause similar pain and it becomes difficult to eat or drink under such circumstances. As mentioned earlier, there are different types of toothpaste available based on your oral health requirement.
There are various toothpaste available for sensitive teeth that contain potassium nitrate and strontium chloride. The chemical compounds do not reduce pain immediately and could take around four weeks to offer relief from pain.
4. Whitening Toothpaste
Who doesn’t enjoy flaunting their bright smile at social events, office meetings, family gathering and so on? However, if your teeth are stained and have a yellow shade, it discourages you from smiling. In such cases, a toothpaste that contains a high number of silicates is recommended. The most frequently asked question is, do whitening toothpaste work? A toothpaste that contains whitening ingredients is likely to change the shade of the yellow teeth to a whiter shade. Typically, whitening toothpaste do not contain bleaches but include abrasives and chemicals that polish the teeth and help in removing stains from the teeth.
There are concerns regarding the use of abrasives and the damage it can inflict on the teeth. However, several studies have revealed that whitening toothpaste works similarly on tooth enamel compared to the other types of toothpaste.
