12 Easy Tips for Dental Care and Healthy Teeth

Keeping your teeth and gums healthy is very important. Everyone likes to have a sparkling smile. It is necessary to avoid discomforts like toothaches, decay, gum diseases, etc which might have a serious impact not only your teeth but on your body as well.

If you are having trouble with dental care, then check out these tips which will help you to have healthy teeth. The dentists in Pune suggest the following easy tips to maintain a good oral hygiene.

1. Brush Twice a Day

It is ideally suggested to brush twice a day to avoid gum disease and tooth decay. The best time to brush teeth is after meals. Use a toothbrush with a small head for better access to the teeth in the back. Soft bristles are gentle for your gums. Apart from this remember the following:

  • Change your toothbrushes 3 to 4 times a year
  • If you have braces use special toothbrushes and other oral hygiene tools to brush your teeth.

2. Floss your teeth daily

Always floss your teeth daily to protect them. Use a gentle and slow sawing motion while flossing.

3. Rinse or chew gum after your meals

Apart from flossing and brushing, rinsing your mouth is very important. Use an antibacterial rinse to prevent decay and gum problems. Chewing sugar-free gum after meals helps to protect your teeth by increasing saliva flow in your mouth. This washes away the bacteria naturally and also neutralizes acid.

4. Use right amount of fluoride

Fluoride has been the biggest advance in oral health which helps to strengthen the tooth enamel making it less vulnerable for any tooth decay. You can use toothpastes and mouth rinse which contain fluoride. But use fluoride sparingly especially in the case of young children- a pea sized dab on the toothbrush is the right amount. Too much of fluoride can result in white spots on teeth.

5. Use proper brushing technique

Brush thoroughly after meals. Tooth brushing should be done for about two to three minutes.

6. Limit intake of acidic drinks

Take proper care of your teeth by avoiding acidic drinks like soft drinks, fruit juices, and cordials. Carbonated drinks make matters worse as carbonation increases acidity. The food acids soften the tooth and dissolve the minerals in the tooth enamel. This results in the development of holes or cavities or caries. In some sever cases; the teeth may be eaten right down to the gum.

7. Limit intake of sugary foods

Avoid consumption of sugary foods. The bacteria in the mouth break down simple sugars and produce acids which can erode tooth enamel and thereby result in tooth decay. Sticky candies and toffees cause damage to the teeth as they linger on teeth surfaces.

8. Maintain a healthy diet

Right from an early age it is essential to maintain a healthy diet for healthy teeth and gums. Eat smart and have a well-balanced diet which includes grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy products and nuts which will provide the necessary nutrients.

9. Protect your teeth from injury

Recreational and sports activities are very good for your body, but they can pose a threat to your teeth. Block blows to the teeth by using proper protection. It is best advised to wear a protective gear like a helmet or mouth guard while playing any sports.

10. Use your teeth only for chewing

It is always best to protect your teeth and avoid using them for anything other than chewing food. You risk chipping or even breaking your teeth if you use them to remove bottle tops, rip open packaging or crack nuts.

11. Avoid smoking

Do not smoke or use smokeless tobacco as tobacco stains the teeth. It significantly increases the risk or oral cancer and gum disease.

12. Visit your dentist for regular check-ups

You should visit your dentist in case of any dental problem like toothache, bleeding gums. Most of the experts recommend dental check-ups every 6 months or whenever you have problems like gum disease. During a routine dental check-up the dentist will remove any plaque build-up which you are not able to brush or floss away. They also look for signs of decay and any other problem.
